Police Uncover Extensive Cat Theft Operation

Vietnamese authorities have rescued more than 400 cats believed to have been stolen for the meat trade, following the disruption of an alleged cat theft ring, according to an animal welfare organization. Nine individuals have been apprehended in connection with the operation, which police in Ho Chi Minh City described as a "criminal group specialising in stealing and collecting cats."

Details of the Raids and Recoveries

Last week, police conducted raids in Tay Ninh Province and Ho Chi Minh City, recovering over 400 live cats and approximately 80 deceased animals preserved on ice. An additional 21 cats were seized from a separate location. While the consumption of dog and cat meat is legal in Vietnam, vendors are required to possess permits that verify the animals' origins.

Investigations into the group began on June 11, prompted by a rise in pet thefts in Ho Chi Minh City. Suspects reportedly admitted to trapping and collecting cats across southern Vietnam over the past three years. According to investigators, the stolen cats were transported to holding facilities before being sold to traders, with transactions occurring every two to three days.

Reunions and Ongoing Efforts

Humane World for Animals reported on Tuesday that around 40 of the rescued cats have since been reunited with their owners. The organization commended local authorities for their "decisive action," noting that while many lives were saved, some animals unfortunately died due to the ordeal. The group is currently providing food and supplies for the cats still held by police as evidence.

The police investigation is ongoing, and residents who suspect their pets have been stolen are encouraged to come forward to assist in identifying the recovered animals.

The Broader Context of Cat and Dog Meat Trade

An estimated five million dogs and one million cats are captured, stolen, trafficked, and slaughtered for meat in Vietnam each year, according to Humane World for Animals. The organization highlights that pets are frequently stolen from homes, with methods including poisoned bait, tasers, and iron pincers for dogs, and spring-loaded snares for cats.

While the consumption of dog and cat meat remains more prevalent in Vietnam compared to some other Asian nations, campaigners suggest that public attitudes are evolving. A 2023 survey commissioned by Humane World for Animals revealed increasing public opposition, particularly among younger generations and pet owners, with majorities supporting bans on both dog and cat meat trades.
