Grammy Awards Expand Categories to Embrace Global Genres

The Grammy Awards are set to introduce five new categories, notably including Best Asian Pop Music Performance and Best Latin Song. This expansion follows a period of increasing global recognition for these genres, highlighted by several historic achievements at previous ceremonies.

Recognizing Diverse Musical Talent

Harvey Mason Jr., chief executive of the Grammys, stated that the decision to broaden the categories aims to make the event "more inclusive" and better "represent more music creators, artists, writers and producers." This move aligns with the Recording Academy's previous efforts, such as adding numerous Korean and Latino artists to its voting panel last year, which was widely interpreted as preparation for such an expansion.

Mason Jr. further explained that these changes were "inspired by our music community sharing with us that they felt they needed to have more opportunities to celebrate different and new genres of music."

New Category Specifics and Recent Milestones

For the new Best Latin Song award, nominated tracks must be "predominantly in the Spanish language." The Best Asian Pop Music Performance category will be open to various Asian pop genres, including K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop.

These additions come after significant moments in recent Grammy history. Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny made history by winning the Album of the Year for a record sung entirely in Spanish. Additionally, the K-Pop track "Golden" from the movie KPop Demon Hunters, performed by the fictional group Huntr/x, became the first K-Pop song to win a Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media, underscoring the growing influence of Korean pop culture.

Additional Category Changes and Rule Adjustments

Beyond the Asian Pop and Latin categories, other new awards include Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, and Best Traditional Folk Album. The existing R&B Performance category will now exclusively focus on solo acts, while the current Folk Album prize will be dedicated to contemporary folk music.

Eligibility criteria for the Best New Artist award have also been revised, increasing the maximum number of times a performer can be submitted from three to four. This adjustment will allow artists who have previously been nominated multiple times, such as Ravyn Lenae and Ella Langley, to be considered again. These new categories and rule modifications are scheduled to be implemented for the upcoming Grammy Awards ceremony.
